Scientists are amazed by goats that live on an island for 200 years without drinking water

The story of goats surviving for 200 years without drinking water on the island of Santa Barbara may seem incredible, but it is a fact. Santa Barbara Island is located off the northeastern coast of Brazil.

Santa Barbara is the largest of Brazil’s Abrolhos Islands, located about 70 kilometers off the coast of Bahia state. The island is administered by the Brazilian Navy and is generally off-limits to the public.

According to historical records, about 250 years ago, sailors left goats on the island as food reserves during the colonial period. Over time, these goats adapted to the island’s dry and harsh environment.

There is no known source of fresh water on the island and scientists have never seen these goats drinking water. Two main theories have been put forward about their survival, which are as follows;

1) Consumption of seawater: Some experts believe that these goats may have become accustomed to drinking seawater and this habit was passed down from generation to generation.

2) Obtaining moisture from plants: Another theory is that the goats obtained moisture from a plant called "Beldroega" found on the island, which is high in water content.
